ABP Southampton is preparing to welcome the largest container ship yet on Tuesday, November 7.
In 2016 the largest container vessel calling in Southampton had a capacity for 16,000 containers.
And this year the Port has so far welcomed MOL Triumph and MOL Trust with a capacity for 20,170 containers.

Milan Maersk is one of the largest vessels of her type in the world with a capacity for 20,568 containers – that’s nearly 400 containers more than MOL Triumph.
The mega-ship belongs to the second generation of Maersk Line’s Triple-E class (Economy of scale, Energy efficient and Environmentally improved) and is part of a series of eleven container ships, which will be delivered by the end of 2018.
Milan Maersk’s propulsion and software system creates energy savings which aims to reduce carbon emissions per container vessel by 35 percent.
This new generation of more efficient and environmentally friendly container ships joins LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) and solar powered RoRo vessels already visiting the Port of Southampton.
ABP Southampton Director, Alastair Welch said: “Milan Maersk is just the latest of these new megaships to visit the Port of Southampton. Not only are these vessels bigger - they are much cleaner too and we are seeing more of these new generation ships visiting across the port’s key trades. The Port of Southampton is ideally suited to welcome these megaships.”

Today, Milan Maersk, the largest vessel to ever call at the port, and one of a new fleet of vessels that are among the most environmentally efficient container ships in the world, arrived at DP World Southampton.
Her visit also coincided with the arrival of the first of DP World’s new fleet of all-electrical vehicles which is part of the company’s commitment to work in a sustainable and responsible way.
DP World Southampton has published its approach to operating as a sustainable and successful business, by reducing its impact on the environment and strengthening the community in which it operates in.
Examples to date include the terminal’s quay cranes which are electric-powered and regenerate power during the load/discharge cycle.
Nick Loader, Chief Executive Officer, DP World Southampton, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Milan Maersk. As technology develops there are more opportunities to operate in an environmentally sustainable way and this Maersk vessel together with our five new electric vehicles are good examples of this.”
Milan Maersk is a new Triple-E class container ship. The Triple-E class is among the largest and most efficient fleet of container vessels in the world. The giant vessels have a dual engine with a maximum speed of 23 knots to increase efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions per moved container, and feature a waste heat recovery system which uses hot exhaust gas to produce extra propulsion.  Maersk is also setting new standards for ship recycling with the Triple-E fleet through a new ‘cradle-to-cradle’ passport which records around 95% of the material used to build the ships to allow for improved recycling and disposal.

AidaPrima makes a regular cruise call in Southampton and when she is in the port she is powered by LNG.
And in 2020, Project Gala will see P&O cruises introduce Britain’s largest cruise ship and she will be powered at sea and in port by LNG.
