The sink hole at the Port of Liverpool
Peel have said the hole has not affected operations at the port
This is the sinkhole which appeared at the Port of Liverpool’s £400m Liverpool2 container terminal.
The hole appeared at the new port complex, which opened in November and the area had to be sealed off.
The ECHO has now been sent a photograph of the hole, which is just yards from the water on the dock wall, taken by a visitor to the site.
The hole appears to be around 50 feet deep. Owners Peel have said the area has been sealed off and that the hole has not affected work at the terminal.
A spokesperson from Peel Ports said: “Following the cavity which appeared at a berth at Liverpool2, we have secured the affected area and our contractors and their technical experts are conducting a full assessment to understand the root cause. Once this has been completed a programme of remedial works will be developed and deployed.

“Initial investigative work has not identified any other areas of a similar nature. Given the length of the Liverpool2 berth this has not affected the terminal’s operations.”
Work started on the new terminal in 2015, and completed in November 2016. Around 100 men worked on the project. The new port is expected to be able to handle the majority of the world’s giant container ships. The port’s landmark giant red cranes will unload the very largest ships that will berth on the Mersey. The five ‘megamax’ cranes are able to move along the waterfront.
The new port is expected to result in a massive increase in the amount of traffic travelling through the area. Highways England is considering whether to make adjustments to Church Road, or whether to build a new road through Rimrose Valley park in Litherland.
Church Road is the main route between the motorway network and the port in Seaforth.
