MSC Anna the latest world's largest makes her maiden call to Felixstowe as the first port of call in her maiden voyage to Europe. At 399.98 metres by 58.6 metres she can hold an impressive 19437TEU.
The pilot boarded the MSC Anna at the Sunk which is about 12 nautical miles out to sea and guided her through the main channels to the harbour. As MSC Anna was heading inbound she passed a previous record breaker the Maribo Maersk which had left Felixstowe Berth 8 earlier in the morning.
As she was passing the Harwich Approach Buoy the Svitzer Deben left the tug pontoon and headed out to be made fast on the centre lead aft before the Beach End for an in-direct tow around the 90º turn into the harbour. A few minutes later the Svitzer Madeleine left the pontoon to position herself on the most aft pushing point on the starboard side. Rounding the Beach End and slowly dropping off the speed the Svitzer Shotley met the MSC Anna on a northerly heading inside the harbour to go bow to bow.
With a brisk southerly wind this huge piece of metal needed an little helping hand to slow up so the pilot got the Svitzer Deben, aft, to go straight back at 50% power to get some knots off before the starboard swing onto berth 8.
Swung around the next task was to bring her alongside so Svitzer Deben and the Shotley were both pulling while the Madeline was pushing her towards the berth. Closer to the berth the Deben and Shotley moved around to a check position on the portside to level her up and slow her down for a soft touch onto the fenders.
Final tie up was 5 and 2 each end with the spring lines first.
Estimated time of departure is around midday on the 27th January 2017. If you miss her she will be back on the 3rd, 4th or 5th of February 2017 but not as heavy as she was toady.
